Sereen Gualtieri

Sereen Gualtieri is an acrylic painter and illustrator specializing in creating colorful, textural, and lively pieces of art on reclaimed wood that reflect the process of internal healing and life redemption. Born to two immigrants, a mother from South Korea and a father from Jordan, Sereen has developed a deep understanding of the beauty and complexity of diversity in people, and their life experiences that is reflected in her work. The themes in her art also developed in light of her awareness to the problem of human trafficking. Sereen’s art alludes to the lives and faces of specific women she has actively advocated for through volunteering and fundraising for anti-trafficking organizations in the past ten years. The underlayment of hope and compassion in the images creates a connection point for anyone who has been through life-dominating circumstances to experience hope and healing.

For the first time ever, the United States was ranked in the 2010 Trafficking in Persons report. While many people are unaware of the existence of modern day slavery, there are others who fight for abolition. In Gainesville, statistics and numbers are being brought to reality with an installation that reflects the conditions of a child's life as a sex slave.

Sereen, a multi-talented artist makes hand-made art objects including paintings like the ones in this video. I had the privilege of watching her in action as she finished up a special series of paintings she was making on a makeup dresser.
